Yes, as Tomcal points out, it would certainly be terrible if poor people wanted to live nice luxurious lives like ours. We must work hard to convince them that they are really happier the way they are.

Thank you, Dr. Helen, for the link to my first venture into Bloggerland. I truly appreciate it.

Hattie, I'm going to assume that the sarcasm oozing out of your comment is intentional. If that's not the case, I apologize and perhaps you could clarify your comment.

If, however, as I suspect, it is intentional, then I have to ask: do you really think it's intellectually honest to equate the observation that it's a disservice to instill McMansion dreams in people living in an economy that can't provide them (and, therefore, assistance should be given that improves their condition without producing that disparity) with the act of convincing the poor that they're happy being poor by the standards of your economy and lifestyle?

But thanks for the humor of making a comment that could easily bear the headline (after skimming your blog) of "Self-described bourgeois, first class-travelling, Paris-vacationing, opponent of the dreaded Patriarchy, Democrat condemns male Capitalist for attempting to help Nicaraguan poor".

The idea that the values of the America and its government should be swallowed lock, stock and barrel by other nations whether those nations want them or not is what got us knee deep into a war in Iraq. Dangerous stuff.

Cham, I'm not sure how that is relevant to anything I said, or even anything Hattie said, but your point is noted (although I hesitate to discuss it, as any such discussion will necessarily involve the nasty innards of philosophical systems ... the nature of reality, the source and purpose of morality, the goals and duty of government, etc. ... and that's a bigger topic than I'm sure Helen wants to see in her comments.)

Hattie, I also spent a bit of time looking at your blog, and like saltedslug (salted, I bow to you) I couldn't figure out whether your comment was sarcastic or not.

As I pointed out in my post, my experience has been that you have work hard to convince them that they would be happier if they lived like we do.

Of course the "poor" will accept things if you just give them to them, who wouldn't? But once they understand what they actually have to do (adopt our culture) to live like we do, they usually say "Gracias, pero no".

Tom,

Sure, I look forward to reading more of your posts.

As for Cham and Hattie up there, at least each minute they spend spouting their views on my blog instead of irritating some poor man (or woman) with their socialist propaganda out in the real world is a minute of peace for someone out there. It's nice to know that I can be part of that.
