What if ...Schools Actually Taught?

Google has a contest called "Doodle 4 Google:"

Doodle 4 Google is a competition where we invite K-12 students to reinvent Google's homepage logo. This year we asked U.S. kids to doodle around the theme "What if...?"

Apparently, the kids can write up the answer to "What if" in any form they choose. Take a look at the answers of some of the finalists--most have to do with social justice, global warming and going green:

My doodle, "Up in the Clouds", expresses a world in the sky. This new world is clean and fresh, and people are social and enlightened. Every person here is treated as family no matter who they are. The bright sun heats this ideal place with warmth, love, and brightens everyone's day.

What if … the world stops racism, and all people , black and white, and all religions, can join together. Most people think racism has been over for a number of years, but everywhere in the world people are still battling because they are different.

What if the whole world lent a helping hand? There wouldn't be homeless people. Also, we'd all have equal rights. There would be angels, no devils, and only heroes. There would be peace on earth. That's what would happen if the whole world lent a helping hand.

What if we could save the rainforest? Rainforests combat global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide and they provide us with numerous resources such as food, pharmaceuticals, and industrial goods that we use in everyday life. It is essential that we save these wonderous forests for the good of the planet.

My answer to the "What if" question and the corresponding logo would be somewhat different. It would show Google with the PC police hanging off the logo yelling various slogans about going green and "social justice" that is rarely about justice and more about looking and feeling smug and self-justified.

"What if ...schools stopped brainwashing kids in PC rhetoric and actually taught them to read and write?" We might have fewer kids who ended up like the ones in Dallas--75 percent of the seniors headed to Dallas community colleges can’t read above an 8th grade level and others can't add or subtract-- and more who actually knew something.

Q: "What if ...schools stopped brainwashing kids in PC rhetoric and actually taught them to read and write?"

A: We would have fewer people in jails and prisons and more people contributing to society.

When I see or hear the word "enlightened" used as it is in this sort of context, I want to barf. There's a reason for the saying ""If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him."

I'd like to see more people just be normal.

Sigh. What a world, what a world. I was talking with am 11th grader recently and made a reference to Jekyll and Hyde. He looked at me blankly.

He was a B student.

These are the kind of answers you get from kids that have never left their suburban tract home or the comfort of mom's SUV. They are in for a really rude awakening, if they ever choose to leave their parents basement. (note: I said if not when).

The world would be pretty boring without a few devils. I'm not interested in living in a clean and fresh world and having my day brightened constantly. And the rainforest is 6,000 miles away, if you lived that and were subsisting on a strict diet of yucca root and 1 ounce piranhas that you had to catch with a stick, well, perhaps saving the rainforest wouldn't be your biggest challenge in life. Google might want to rethink their finalists, that California sunshine is frying their brain cells.

Without Devils, how do you know what is heroic or an angel. Without the dark how can you know the light?

If everyone was the same, how would we do that, increase those on the bottom rung, or reduce those from the upper rungs.

The global warming myth, it was far warmer 2000 years ago, than it was 1000, we are just getting BACK to how it was. CO2 is plant food, we have less of it in the atmosphere for thousands of years.

All this shows is that These kids are being taught politics and feelings, rather than reality.

And when they see the real world, red in tooth and claw, they will have a culture shock. And thats not good for anyone.

There were a few that were not bad, and I was impressed with some of the artwork. But the pc-spouting was a little nauseating. I should ask my kids the "what-if" question and. My boy is likely to come up with something involving weaponry.

Trey - arrgh! I guess some folks' what-if is a world where they don't have to teach dead white male authors. And that world is here!

I was at the International Quilt Festival about a month ago. One tryptich of Art Quilts was labeled as being inspired by the creator's passion for sustainable watershed management.

In economics, the Fundamental Economic Problem is defined as "Unlimited wants, limited resources". Multiple people, groups, nations etc. competing for the same scarce resource(s) is the root of all conflict. It really is that simple - not easy, just simple.

If keeping your thermostat near 60 isn't for the enviroment, is it to save money?

Serket: I haven't run my furnace in years. My thermostat is actually wonderful for showing me the time and room temperature though. There are a lot of benefits to keeping the heat off, environmental, cost and not handing money over to a corrupt utility company which is what we have in our area.

I am absolutely mesmerized by the current crop of folks who have failed to pay their utility bill over the winter and are now facing turn-offs. Affected Americans are on TV saying with a straight face that home heating is a necessity. I am also learning that milk is a necessity, meat is a necessity, wheat is a necessity and gasoline is a necessity. I can' wait to see what I am going to learn next week.

Bullseye! I say, "Shut up and teach".

I've echoed your thought when commenting on educational matters in the local newspapers and it doesn't even irritate anyone.

Some of these little critters are in for a rude awakening - assuming they really believe what they've written. I think most of them are just trying to please.

When I was this age, I think most of the "what ifs" would have centered around technology. What if we had space ships that could take us all over the universe, etc. And some of us - if we were good at math and science - might have actually come close to making those what-ifs real.

The rest of us - like me, for instance - would eventually live our lives according to the slogan on my favorite de-motivational office poster: "Get back to work. You aren't being paid to believe in the power of your dreams."
